FORM

SCHOOL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

The sending and receiving of vast amount of information in long distances and in short period of time has been a goal since human beings learnt to communicate. Words are continuously added to languages to convey new or more complete ideas. Method of transmitting those words and related information have been and are continually being developed. Along with this methods, codes have been arisen to convey letters, words and data. The coding of information into quantities of sound or smoke were two of the earliest attempts to communicate over long distances. The transfer of data in the digital form began around 1832 with the advent of Morse code, a systematic code that represents printable characters of a language using a form of binary data. Morse code served as a means of communicating information for a considerable amount of time. Within the production of work and business office environment, requirement of quick access to large amounts of information have led to the development of localized communication systems, such as local area networks(LAN), metropolitan area network (MAN) and wide area network (WAN). The networks are formed by computer system, communication equipment, various terminals and peripheral devices connected to a common communication network. Still the boundaries of communication are being extended. Multiple channels of communication are carried simultaneously through networks spanning the globe. More communication satellites are circling the earth, while fibre optic

transatlantic cables are being laid. The fibre optic cables will supply many times the number of communication lines presently available. Integrated communication services have been developed that provide a way to sent and receive voice, video and data information on a single network. This service is called integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).

Based on communication techniques, Information Technology is growing very rapidly. The increasing applications of computers in almost all areas of human endeavor have led to a vibrant industry with concurrent rapid change in technology. There are two main streams of computer education: engineering stream leading to BE/B Tech, ME degree, and application stream leading to BCA and MCA degree. In Engineering stream primary stress is devoted to design of computer hardware and system software. On the other hand, the major emphasis in computer application is given on designing information systems for various organizations such as banks, insurance companies, hotel, factories, educational institutes and hospitals. The main objectives of the students will be to develop application software in diverse areas where computers are widely used. The students shall be provided with a sound background in computing, business functions and mathematics relevant to information Technology.

Keeping all this in mind, the University established the School of IT and CS in 2002 and introduced the BCA and MCA programmes with prior approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The School is equipped with the latest P4 PC with internet and print facilities, and also with electronic laboratory having latest instruments.

POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA
IN
BAMBOO CULTIVATION AND RESOURCE UTILIZATION

INTRODUCTION

Bamboo is an inimitable fast growing versatile material and has the advantage of creating large-scale employment and livelihood opportunities in rural areas. It has a strong relationship with rural community, allowing them to participate in a larger proportion of value-added products. As per conservative estimate a ton of bamboo creates 350 man-days. Benefits of the bamboo can be capitalized to reduce poverty, create employment, and increase income and protection of environment.

India has the largest bamboo forest which is 12.8 % of the total forest cover. World consumption of bamboo is at present estimated to be US $10 billion and predicted to reach US $20 billion by 2015. The market potential in our country is estimated to be Rs. 4463 crores against the present domestic market of Rs. 2043 crores.

The North East India can be considered the "treasure house" of Bamboo Resources (BRs). There are about 60 species with 16 genera growing in the vast track of land of north-east India. All the states in the region have 66 percent of the total growing stocks of bamboo of the country. The BRs are still now unutilized in the region for socio-economic development. It can be assumed that due to lack of community organization, pro-poor technology facilitation and private public partnership, the sector could not reach at the zenith of success.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India has considered bamboo as a priority species and initiated a network programme for production of high quality material under the National Bamboo Mission Programme. Tripura being one of the natural herbaria of bamboo species in the North-East region has a great potential for bamboo cultivation. Nowadays bamboo resources are utilized in large scale as well as in small scale industries. The young shoots of certain bamboo species are also used as food by tribes and other communities signifying the diversity of their food habit in this region.

Under the above background National Council of Rural Institutes, MHRD, Govt. of India has approved a Post-graduate Diploma course on "Bamboo Cultivation and Resource Utilization" and also provided the required financial assistance for the said curriculum. Accordingly the Centre for Rural Studies of Tripura University is going to introduce the Post-graduate Diploma course on "BAMBOO CULTIVATION AND RESOURCE UTILIZATION" from the session 2006 - 2007.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the course are :

1. To motivate students for self-confidence and to generate self-employment.

2. To impart scientific knowledge on diverse utilization of the valuable resources and its cultivation.

3. To develop the essential infrastructure for R & D in Bamboo cultivation and its utilization.

Introduction

Since independence, India has faced many problems and challenges in the process of attaining sustainable socio-economic development through a series of five years plans. It is a fact that India could tackle some of the major problems, especially of achieving self sufficiency in food production. Indian economy, as we know it today, presents a paradoxical picture of extremes. We see a rosy picture showing rapid strides in space research, nuclear technologists constituting the third largest in the world after the developed countries, augmenting agricultural and industrial production, etc. On the other side, we find the opposite having persisting poverty, hunger, malnutrition, high rates of illiteracy, growing unemployment, etc. People living in rural areas are economically backward and deprived of basic facilities like health, education, transportation, communication and amenities like protected drinking water, food, clothing, shelter, etc. As a result most of them are prone to poverty, illiteracy, ignorance and ill health.

To develop the aspects of rural problem scenario, professionalism is a crucial factor. It is observed that there are two categories of people — the traditional bureaucrats (i.e. the power mongers) and the other, charismatic personalities (i.e. the professionalisms and the active workers). Professionalism has become an integral part of rural development. In this direction the Tripura University launched the one year Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development (PGDRD) in 2004, mainly to equip Rural Development Professionals. After 2 years completion of PGDRD, the response from likeminded people was overwhelming.

Subsequently PGDRD programme has been upgraded to 2-year Master of Rural Management and Development (MRMD) programme in 2006.

It is the time to make Rural Development Professionals to think globally and to act locally so as to ensure their intervention relevant, appropriate, latest, just and right.
